Staying Healthy throughout the "Flu" Season
This is the time of year when people actually start thinking about their health. We can actually thank the crazy Swine Flu propaganda that is floating around scaring people half to death. So, why is the H1N1 any different than any other "big" flu virus? I have no idea; so, if you thought I was going to give you this thought-provoking insight, you are sadly mistaken. We "old folks" survived a lot of the really bad "flu" like the Hong Kong Flu. Yes people died from that. I even know one person who lost all her hair as a result. It affects different people in different ways, much the same as anything else. People die from flu every year. It's like Mother Nature taking away and giving back. You're born and you die. It's what you do in between that counts. You take care of your health and you do the best that you can to keep your immune system up. That does a lot right there. You eat right and make sure you're getting the best nutrients into your body that you can. I've actually recently heard people touting, "My kids have the Swine Flu, but you know, Homecoming's at the end of the week and I'm sure they'll be over it by then. I can't let them miss out on that!" I just want to reach out and slap that parent! I was good. I didn't do it. If the kids are sick, no matter what they have, your job as a parent is to make sure they STAY HOME until they are better. After all, YOU are the parent, which means you are the BOSS! Good old chicken soup works wonders! Oh? You don't know how to cook? Oh? Too busy running from one fast food restaurant to another? Kids need good nutrition. Adults need good nutrition. You all need rest. . . . oh? You get all the rest you need? That's how you got sick?
It's amazing to me how many people do not realize that the body actually needs 8 hours of continuous sleep every night. They need that not only for the body to heal and rest from the previous day's events, but it's the time when cells regenerate in the body. If you are not getting that 8 hours of sleep (and by the way, the kids actually need 10 hours of sleep every night), then you are prone to all the dis-eases of the century, the flu, the bacteria and bugs. Look at the typical kid's schedule (and I'm also talking to those kids in the teen years -- I understand that you're "young adults" now, excuse me). They're up at 6am, at the bus stop anywhere from 6:15 to 7:00am, at or in school by 7:30-8:30am, in school all day long, with maybe a 20 minute quick lunch. Then you have those after school activities like drama club, football practice, all those games you have to be at, dance, band practice, yada yada yada, and then after that, there's soccer practice and soccer games! No wonder the kids are sick. No wonder you are sick! If you're lucky, you're having dinner at 8 or 9pm? and then what, computer games, homework? What's that? So, we wonder why the kids are stressed? Why we are stressed and sick and tired and . . . . . . .?
Good nutrition consists of fresh fruit and vegetables, or fresh frozen (among other things) not the stuff that comes out of a box. Oh? They're convenient? Yes. They are, and what are you doing to your family and yourself when you're constantly preparing food out of a box. Do you know how many chemicals that manufacturers actually put into those boxed items? 10,000 or more? What about that microwave. Cooking everything in the microwave are you? Nothing like radiating all that food and zapping any nutrition that was in the food to begin with right out of it. Hate to cook? Teach your spouse and your kids how to cook. Take turns cooking each night. Did you "can" anything this year? That means taking all that great produce that (maybe?) you steamed and put up in canning jars for the winter? Is your cupboard full? If it is, GREAT JOB. If not, there's always next year. Unfortunately, most people have never gotten past "next year I'll have a garden and grow my own food". It's up to parents to TEACH their children about good nutrition and how to keep themselves healthy. It's not the Teacher's job at their school to do this. It's not their child/children. So, if I seem like I'm picking on Parents today, well, I am. While you're teaching them what's right and wrong, teach them about good nutrition, how to keep their immune systems built up, how many hours every night they need to sleep, so when they become adults, like you, they'll be able to pass that along to their kids.
In closing, make sure you all get plenty of Vitamin C, D3, Astragalus, the proper nutrition, and proper sleep and you'll sail through the "Flu Season" with hardly a sniffle.
